This guide outlines the procedure for adding product relationships in LightSpeed to ensure accurate inventory management and product setup. Assigning product packaging relationships helps divide larger quantities from your supplier into smaller quantities for sale, improving inventory tracking and order management.
Prerequisites:
Info required: | Product details and supplier details. |
Access required: | LightSpeed system access. |

Preparing to Assign Relationships
Set up each UOM as an independent product, whether that is a single standard SKU or a Variant. It is recommended to set up a product with variants if you sell more than one quantity of a product. This way, all the quantities you sell are accessible in one place, making inventory management more efficient.
Important
- Product relationships can only be set up using variant or standard products. Composite products cannot be used for product relationships.
- When assigning product relationships, each variant or standard product can only be divided once. For example, a box of 12 bottles can only be divided into packs of six OR single bottles, not both. However, you can divide the Box of 12 in pack of 6 and then the pack of 6 into single bottles.

Types of Product Relationships:
The products that [product] comes from: If the product is available in a larger packaging size, add the product it comes from here.
The product that [product] breaks into: If the product breaks into a smaller packaging size, add the product it breaks into here.

Assignment Relationships
- Navigate to Catalog > Products.
- Click on the product to edit it.
- In the Variants section:
- Ensure the box amount and all the quantities you sell are separate variants in the product.
- Click on the first variant to expand it and select Packaging. Example: the 1L bottle variant that breaks down from a box of 12).
- In the Product comes from section, click Add a Product Relationships.
- In the Search or scan to add a product box, type the variant quanity the product comes from (e.g the 1L comes from the box of 12).
- Click the product to link the relationship.
- Enter how many units from the product (e.g. 12 1L bottles come from one box of 12).
- Click Save.
Note: Once you add a relationship to a variant, it will autofill in all relevant sections. For example, if you assign a relationship in the comes from section for the 1L variant, it will automatically show in the breaks into section for the box of 12 product.

Once all product relationships are set for a product, you can divide your inventory into smaller quantities for sale and tracking. This allows you to determine how many larger packs to keep and how many to break into smaller units. You can divide products individually or in bulk.
